History[edit]

Backstory[edit]

Yayoi Hanayama is said to be an office lady working for a leading company. She has dated many men in the past, who she often recounts stories of. One was a Dutch man who was a fan of Spanish football, and obsessed with systems. Another was a fan of Sonny and Tubbs Balboa. In 2001, she went on vacation at the Hotel Flower, Sun, and Rain, staying in Room 204.

Flower, Sun, and Rain[edit]

Yayoi first appears in Request 02: Air in G, when she is approached by Sumio Mondo on the hotel roof. He was sent to her by Stephan Charbonie to answer his football-related riddle. Mondo asks her if she is a Romanista, or knows anything about systems engineering. She tells Mondo that she recognizes Charbonie, who has been there for three months, and denies being acquainted with him. She helps Mondo decipher the meaning of a "trequarista", and the phrase "La vita continua". Stephan calls Yayoi on her cellphone, which she hands off to Mondo. Yayoi realizes that Mondo is the searcher she had heard about, and questions why he carries his briefcase with him. After Mondo refers to Catherine as a finer woman than her, Yayoi becomes flirty with him. Mondo returns to ask more about football, and she tells him about her Dutch ex-boyfriend and his obsession with systems. She tells Mondo that she is a Liverpool fan.

She appears again in Request 05: The Entertainer, when Mondo talks to her on the roof to learn about the Balboa brothers. She gives him some basic information about them, and mentions her ex who was a fan of theirs.

Yayoi's next appearance is Request 06: Air in G, when she is poisoned by Stephan as part of a game with Mondo. She is offered two cocktails by the waiter, one of which is compliments of the hotel. One is a safe blue cocktail, while the other is a red poisoned one. Due to not reading the Lospass Guidebook's horoscope to learn that the color blue is lucky, she drinks the red cocktail and falls unconscious. Mondo finds her on the roof, still knocked out. He informs Edo Macalister and tells him to call an ambulance, before finding Yayoi again on the bed in Stephan's room. After solving Stephan's puzzle, Mondo realizes that she wasn't poisoned, and was simply given a sleeping pill. In her sleep, she yells the name "Adrian", while dreaming about the film Rocky.

Yayoi's final appearance is in Request 07: Children's corner, when Mondo meets her while chasing after Shoutaro Kai. Mondo meets her at her room, which he searches without finding the boy. She flirts with Mondo about having come to her room, but he ignores her. She says that the kid likes him, and gives Mondo the hint to check his own room.
